SCU, Let Faculty Vote!

Last spring, Father Engh, the president of Santa Clara University, refused to partner with adjunct faculty and lecturers to hold a vote on unionization in the face of broad campus and community support. Last spring, Father Engh, the president of Santa Clara University, refused to partner with adjunct faculty and lecturers to hold a vote on unionization in the face of broad campus and community support. The SCU community is calling on Father Engh and the Board of Trustees to reverse that decision, uphold Jesuit values, and give faculty a fair and free process to choose for themselves whether or not to unionize.

By denying faculty’s initial call for a vote and instead insisting that faculty unionize through Trump’s NLRB, the SCU administration is willfully misrepresenting the lack of protections for workers' rights under the current NLRB. This in effect perpetuates the current president of the United States’ assault on workers’ rights.

A fair and free union vote and eventual unionization is the only way for both faculty and SCU's administration to have an equal voice in the process of improving the campus culture, shared governance, and policies governing faculty.

As Lt. Governor and SCU Alum Gavin Newsom said in regards to this issue, "This choice should be given to the workers, who will decide what is best for them, and we should all do our part to ensure a fair, open and thoughtful process."
