SEIU Local 1021 SCUSD Classified Staff United for a Fair Contract

Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) classified staff are committed professionals dedicated to our students and communities. Unfortunately, District management refuses to recognize the value of our hard work and the many contributions we bring. Our contract expired June 30, 2020, yet District management seems to feel no urgency around negotiations, stalling and refusing to schedule more than one meeting at a time. They have also committed numerous unfair labor practices, including a bait-and-switch with summer program stipends and a unilateral  change in social distancing policy in the midst of an ongoing pandemic.

District management has already proposed a five-year wage freeze and healthcare takeaways to the educators in collective bargaining with Sacramento City Teachers Association (SCTA). While to date, District management has not responded to the proposals we have put forth (including for wage increases), we already have a good idea what's in store for us: a proposal for a wage freeze and benefits cuts; when we reject those, they will issue pink slips in March to try to coerce us into accepting their cuts.

This is unacceptable. SCUSD schools, students, and employees deserve better.

We are united behind our bargaining team and our union sisters and brothers. We, the undersigned SCUSD employees, are united in our demands for a fair contract:

  • We reject the cuts to our pay or benefits that District management is demanding--especially since the Superintendent continues to get raises and is now at approximately $450,000 in total compensation. (For context, the current salary of the President of the United States is $400,000.)
  • Current staffing shortages are creating unsafe, unhealthy environments in our schools, allowing COVID to spread even more, as well as an unsustainable workload--and District management is doing nothing to address it. We need extended COVID sick leave to protect students, staff, faculty, and our families.
  • Cuts to education hurt students, our families, our community, and our staff. The unnecessary layoffs demanded by District management are a cynical ploy to get us to take cuts to our take-home pay and benefits, and we will not stand for it.
  • Our District must provide fair pay and benefits to recruit and retain the best staff.
  • No employee should have to work two or three jobs just to get by. One job should be enough.
  • We are disappointed that District management has continued to commit numerous unfair labor practices.
  • All SCUSD employees and students deserve safe, healthy, carbon-free schools.
  • Invalid phone number
