Protect SCUSD workers from contacting COVID-19

The employees of the Sacramento City Unified School District are putting their lives at risk by working in school sites that may be contaminated by COVID-19. Our agreements with management for protective protocols and transparent communications are not being taken serious and the consequences of these inactions can be dangerous and even fatal.

“For the students to come back to school, we have to demonstrate that we can work safely, but we have workers getting sick with coronavirus. We have people dying in our district. We lost a plant manager last week. We are begging for information and communication and they (management), are distancing themselves even further. Our fear is that our infections are going to keep increasing. Its unfair to our health and safety that they are privy to this information and we’re not. We do not feel protected. We deserve to be notified in a timely manner! “

Some workers have been physically reporting to work onsite for several months during the 6 months since lockdown, and basic protocols are just now being implemented. Many of SCUSD employees are frontline workers. Slow responses and lack of structure are unacceptable when dealing with this virus.

Demand action from SCUSD Superintendent to protect workers!

The administration of Sacramento City Unified School District continues to be incapable of protecting its employees from the escalating infections of COVID-19. There have been several new cases of positive contacts and a death among district employees within the last week. We need immediate change. The lives of SCUSD employees, students, and the future of returning to school sites literally depends on it.

Dear SCUSD management,

We, the supporters and workers of SCUSD, demand that management take the following actions to reduce the chance of workers being exposed to the COVID-19 virus.

1. District administration must immediately announce to its workers and the community that until the threat of COVID-19 infection has been removed or significantly reduced, district workers will continue to work remotely.

2. A communication standard will be officially implemented and followed throughout the district. This includes proper training on all levels and immediate notifications to exposed workers followed by proper quarantine protocols.
