Coronavirus has put the world in a crisis and it has been our members, County workers, who have put their health and safety on the line to serve our community. From hospitals to schools, the services we provide have been applauded as critical and essential, yet we continue to be undervalued and underpaid.

The County has the funding from the CARES Act to provide a 5% essential worker supplemental pay.  We deserve this compensation for all of the hours worked during this crisis.

To quote the Human Resources Director, Brandi Hopkins, “All County workers are considered essential infrastructure workers…. that has not changed.”  (taken from an email from Ms. Hopkins to Bill Petrone, SEIU Regional Director, May 14th, 2020)

Dear San Joaquin County Board of Superviors,

San Joaquin County Workers have continued to show up and serve our community in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis. A crisis which is spreading and directly affecting our most vulnerable community groups. County workers have answered the call to serve despite the dangers to ourselves and our families. If we are indeed essential to the well being of our community then we should be compensated as such.

The 5% Essential Supplemental Pay honors all of us County workers who are on the front line. The safety and well being of our community should be the #1 priority of the Board. As we press on through the uncertainties of Covid, make sure to do right by those sacrificing their well-being to keep the County safe. Working for one of the lowest paying counties in the region, giving essential pay is the least you can do.
