Support CalAcademy Workers United!

On May 25, 2023, CalAcademy Workers United filed for a NLRB union election. Our election petition demonstrated overwhelming support across the California Academy of Sciences for the formal recognition of our union.

Since then, management has been attempting to defeat our organizing campaign by using typical union-busting tactics including:

  • Hiring anti-union consultants and lawyers

  • Launching an internal microsite containing misinformation

  • Hanging posters designed to instill fear and confusion in worker break and storage areas

  • Holding meetings to activate union ineligible supervisors to spread misinformation and quash the union effort

  • Executive Director Scott Sampson announcing that he is “pro-union” –but not for his own staff– at an all-staff meeting

Why won’t Academy management remain neutral so we can vote without intimidation? Why doesn’t the Academy embrace this opportunity to link two great social movements: the movement for our environment and that of organized labor?

Please take a moment to tell the senior leadership team, including Executive Director Scott Sampson and Chief of Staff Michael Costanzo, to stop fighting their employees and do better to live up to the values of the institution so beloved in our city.
