Throughout this pandemic, dedicated SEIU 1021 members working as custodians and building and grounds patrol officers have worked hard to give everyone at 49 S. Van Ness a safe and healthy work environment. Now, GSA is going back on their word and once again threatening to outsource these people's good, union jobs.

Take a moment to sign our petition to protect the jobs of our dedicated custodial and security members who have been working diligently to keep everyone at 49 S. Van Ness safe and healthy throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dear City Administrator Carmen Chu and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors,

Around June 2020, the City opened a new building at 49 S. Van Ness—a 16-story high rise with a 2-level parking garage that provides permits to the public, hosts multiple departments, and houses hundreds of City workers. The SF General Services Agency (GSA) manages the new City building.

The GSA had plans to subcontract custodial and security services using a Prop J contract. Our union intervened and GSA agreed to hire City workers for the work. However, GSA violated its own agreement and is once again threatening to destroy good, union jobs by outsourcing our services.

By attempting to subcontract our work, the City is unnecessarily jeopardizing the health and safety of the public and all the City workers who work at 49 S. Van Ness. Since its opening, our union’s dedicated custodians have been disinfecting and deep cleaning constantly to protect us from the spread of the COVID 19 virus, and security personnel has been upholding public safety for all at the city building. It would be shameful for the City to abandon us now.

That is why we oppose any effort to let subcontractors take good, union jobs away from dedicated, hard-working SEIU 1021 members. This includes 2708 custodians and 8207 building and grounds patrol officers that we represent.

We demand that the City and GSA protect our health and safety, and cease contracting out our work immediately, by hiring permanent, dedicated civil service workers for custodial and security services at 49 S. Van Ness.
